Redirect root domain to www subdomain

← Help Center

Your Owlstown website is successfully appearing under a www subdomain. For example, www.guycameron.me.

However, when you visit the root domain  (no subdomain), your website doesn't show up.

Why?

The reason this happens is your Owlstown website can only be assigned one custom domain, and it is assigned to the www subdomain.

Solution

You need to redirect (or forward) the root domain (no subdomain) to the www subdomain.

Many domain registrars have features to redirect (or forward) a domain to another URL.

Options

Different registrars provide various options when redirecting your root domain to the www subdomain. Here are some of them.

Permanent (301) vs Temporary (302) Redirects: Select Permanent Redirects (301). Read about the difference between permanent and temporary redirects.

Path Forwarding: Select to forward paths to maintain the URL paths from your original domain. For example, http://[example-root-domain]/existing-path will be forwarded to https://www.[example-root-domain]/existing-path

Forwarding Over SSL: Keep SSL on. For example, https://[example-root-domain] will redirect to https://www.[example-root-domain]

If your domain registrar doesn't support forwarding

If your domain registrar doesn't support forwarding or doesn't support all the options above, you can use a dedicated domain forwarding service to handle the redirection. One such service is Redirect Pizza. It's free to redirect a root domain to a www subdomain.
