In a week or two, Academic Link is being retired and rolled into Owlstown Profiles — one profile, living under your own site instead of a shared domain.
What's changing
Today your public profile lives at a shared address: https://academic.link/einstein. Once Profiles launches, it moves to your own site's address instead — e.g. https://einstein.owlstown.net/profile — or your custom domain if you have one connected. The main benefit: your profile builds your own site's brand instead of Academic Link's.
Your profile page still works the same way it does today: a one-page business card with your name, links to your site and other online profiles, and a short bio or description of your work.
What you need to do
Nothing. When Profiles goes live, your existing Academic Link content will be copied over automatically, so you won't start from a blank page.
You'll be able to edit your profile at its new URL, or from your site's dashboard, same as today.
What happens to your old link
https://academic.link/einstein will keep working — it will permanently redirect to your new profile URL, so anything you've already shared or linked to elsewhere won't break.
Coming after launch
A couple of features planned for Profiles:
- If your site is a member of a lab or group site, your profile will be able to appear on that group's People page too. With this feature, you only need to update your profile in one place and it will appear on both your personal site and your lab's site.
- If your site is featured in the Academic Gallery, your profile content will show there as well — a good way to put your site in front of other users. Want to be featured? Email [email protected].
